The idea of the Repository is that more experienced creators submit free models that less experienced creators can use and upload to Cybertown while they're still learning VRML. A basic set of furniture items could theoretically supply the CT Mall with a continuous stock of ever changing items. This excellent idea was first brought up by
doctragoz. Read his statement
here.
The CT Repository would:
- Make it easier for people to get started on uploading
- Encourage more choice in unlimited items and more item availability
In order for this to work with copyright rules etc. in Cybertown, a few issues have to be dealt with:
- All items will need a bit of information about who made the original file and that it's free for use in CT and from the Creator's Group CT Repository. This info must then not be removed by the person using the file.
- It would also be convenient if the person using a certain file uploaded the thumbnail of the resulting item so that others can see what kind of items have already been done. Or at least post some info on it. That way too similar colour combinations etc. can be avoided. (I suggest a sub-page to the item's page, listing thumbnails and/or info.)
And of course, we also need submissions! Without them there won't be much of a repository, now, will there? :)
To submit, create a new page for your item or group of items (if they "belong together", otherwise I suggest one page per item). Then upload your wrl file to the wiki with the "Add an attachment" tool or upload it to your own webspace and link to it. (The wiki only allows 40 attachments total, so eventually we will have to host the files elsewhere.) Remember to keep the file un-gzipped so that it can be opened in Notepad (or any other text editor). It is recommended that you include a thumbnail of the item so that people can see what they get before downloading. It would also be good if the you include info on e.g. how a texture should be "built" in order to fit the item (that is, if the item is made for combined textures) and other such issues.
Now other creators can download and customise the item to their heart's content!
(Once we get an "unmanageable" collection we can organise the pages into categories, e.g. Furniture, Plants, Picture Frames etc.)
